Key themes: in your hands, second look, wearing tinted glasses, time for the real thing, separating fact from fantasy, illusion, reality, build your fantasy, almost real, seeing the truth, where have you been coloring the truth, change perception, power of dreams in your hands.
We have a very busy summer coming up. There’s a lot of back and forth movement, sudden starts and sudden stops. Things moving forward with dramatic speed and others screeching to a halt. If you’ve ever tried to roll out pizza dough, you know that you can push one corner in one direction & the dough will retract a bit, then you push another corner in another direction, and it will retract a bit. This continued stretching it out and letting it retract is what allows the dough to expand without breaking. Keep this image in mind as you walk through the summer. You are still further than where you were, but sometimes, to ensure success, you must retract for a second.
For those of you who’ve read the Wonderful Wizard of Oz you may remember the Emerald City: the final destination of the famous yellow brick road. The ultimate goal. In the book, the city is not green. Those who enter are given glasses – in theory to protect them from the glory of the city, but in reality the glasses are tinted green. Emerald city was no more emerald than any other city. It was the illusion that the glasses gave. Were people to remove their glasses they would discover that their perception & the reality were very different. This is more or less the themes that we’ll be dealing with.
Sometimes we can spend so much time looking at what we’re doing, building, aiming for that we lose consciousness of the bigger picture. We develop a sort of tunnel vision. Our focus can become kind of an obsession where we see only what we think we see. But were we to lift our heads, remove our glasses, take in a greater context, we might perceive things differently.
This week, I’d like you to take a look at your creative projects, your dreams, your version of the Emerald City. Try looking at what you have in your hands through different eyes. If you believe that it cannot fail, double check your numbers. If you believe you will never be able to do it, break it down into believable baby steps. If you believe that you’ve discovered the next internet unicorn, have someone else take a look at it. If you think there’s no way anyone would ever be interested in that idea, have someone else take a look at it.
We are invited to raise our gaze and see the bigger picture. To look at our dreams without the emerald glasses. It is not that an emerald city cannot be built, it absolutely can. But where there is illusion there can be no reality. We must first see what the city is truly made of in order to make it our dream come true.
If things fall away over the summer, remember the necessity of retraction. It does not mean they are gone for good, but that they are part of a natural process that stretches things forward and then has them settle. Bend but don’t break. Allow yourself to ebb & flow as the universe kneads you into the perfect shape.
